Take Control of Your Life

Welcome to thematthewkent.com, I’m really glad you stopped by.

I’m also glad you decided to check out the about page to see if we are a good fit for each other.

The easiest was to do that is for me to ask you some questions about yourself:

  • Do you feel like you want to get back in the driver’s seat in your life?
  • Do you want to get in shape?
  • Lose weight?
  • Earn more money?
  • Start a business or side hustle?
  • Finally get serious about actively chasing your dreams instead of passively playing the hand that life deals you?

If you were shaking your head yes for any of those questions, I think you and I are on exactly the same page.

My Story

Hi, I’m Matthew Kent (nice to meet you).

I grew up honestly and sincerely believing that when I became an adult I would have my life put together.

  • I thought I would be on top of my finances; that I would be earning a ton, spending beneath my means and on the fast track to early retirement.
  • I thought I would be on top of my health; that I would exercise regularly and enjoy a lean body without making any changes to my diet (this one probably looks the most foolish in hindsight).
  • I thought I would constantly be challenging my mind and learning and growing.

Where Things Went Wrong

My 20’s however, were a completely different story.

Coming out of college I had no clear direction for what I wanted to do with my career and so I took the first job that would hire me.

I ended up in a job in manufacturing, eventually moved into customer service and then to what is an entry-level job for someone with a business degree. So there I was when I turned 30, at an entry level job working next to a 22 year old with the same title who was making more than me.

In terms of my health, my 20’s were a time of insidious weight gain. Every year a few pounds would sneak their way onto my formerly skinny frame. It wasn’t nearly fast enough to notice that it was happening, but there was no denying that on the rare occasion that I stepped on the scale, I would see numbers I had never seen there before.

In college my exercise had been taken care of by walking to class and playing pick up sports (mostly Ultimate Frisbee, but also some Racquetball, Football, and occasionally volleyball). After college, I struggled to find any consistently, making lots of attempts to start a home workout routine but usually not following through for very long.

I figured that since I didn’t have cable, I would at least have lots of opportunity to sharpen my mind through the regular reading of good books. This didn’t work out so well; thanks to the rise of streaming media (especially a service that you might have heard of called Netflix), I ended up watching way more television than I ever thought that I would.

As I was approaching the end of my 20’s, I knew it was time to change. I had been adrift and directionless for too long. It was time to right the ship.

Turning It Around

In 2016 I launched both my first blog and my first YouTube channel. Both were pretty rough around the edges, but I finally embraced the idea that it’s better to start something imperfectly than to spend forever deliberating about perfection.

In 2017 I started my first ever diet (yes, of my entire life) and also created this site that you’re on.

Probably more significant was the fact that in January of 2017, my wife and I got together and created our “10 Year Plan for a Remarkable Life.” This was a crucial step in defining or dreams and desires so that I knew what I had to work to.

So far all of these changes have had an enormous impact on my life.

At the time of writing this I have stuck to my diet for months and have seen HUGE results. I’m the leanest that I’ve ever been, I’ve dropped two belt sizes, and at 30, I’m in far better shape than I ever was in my 20’s (it feels good just to type that out). Most importantly maintaining the diet has become easy, and it seems like the kind of lasting lifestyle change that I can keep around forever and will help me age gracefully.

(As a side note, I never even would have started this diet if I hadn’t created my 10 year plan. In the plan I wrote that I wanted to be eating a healthier diet in 10 years and I quickly realized that wasn’t something that was just magically going to happen, it was a change I needed to make and there was no excuse for putting it off. This is how life works: one positive change can facilitate more positive changes).

My online endeavors have been incredibly successful as well, and I’m looking to take them to the next level, that’s part of what this site is about.

But the real reason this site exists is because of my passion for sharing what I’ve learned with others. I think it’s crucial for every single person to know themselves so that they can leverage their strengths, and ever since I was in high school I’ve known that one of my biggest strengths was the ability to explain what I’m learning to others.

Over the past several years I’v taken a deep dive into learning what it will take to build the life that I want. I’ve learned all I could about making money, taking care of your health, and growing in wisdom and maturity. I’ve consumed countless podcasts, blogs, books, audiobooks, and video lectures. During that time I’ve also come up with and refined quite a few useful ideas of my own and, if you’re game, I’d love to share them with you.

The Journey Forward

I’m not by any means a finished product, but I know for sure that I am on the path to success and the more people that can follow along, the better.

Whether or not you decide to join me, I sincerely hope that you’re able to gain control of your life and achieve your goals and dreams. And I urge you to get started today. Tomorrow is the first step to never.

Trust me on this point: your biggest fear shouldn’t be failure, but regret. I succumbed to the fear of failure earlier in life and I’m paying for now in regret. That was not a smart transaction.

The good news is as long as there is still time to put things right, regret doesn’t need to have the final word. I can’t do anything about the decisions I now regret, but I can choose to make the uncomfortable decisions that I know I won’t regret.

I can move forward.

I hope you’ll join me.
